The last vinyl records on catalogue
An advertising insert was issued along with the spring 1988 catalogue supplement offering most remaining LPs at special offer prices, this to deplete stocks of vinyl in the switchover to cassette and CD. On the one hand, this would clear stock in a format that Saydisc now considered to be obsolete and, on the other, it would provide short-term increased cash flow, which was required for the switch to CD, where the cost of production and mastering was high. (A reciprocal deal with the US Musical Heritage Society to help defray these costs is mentioned in the discography on pp. 10-11.)
The special offer was set to run until at least 31 January 1989 and included all LPs still on catalogue, except for Kathryn Tickell's On Kielder Side (SDL 343), The Fairer Sax's Diversions (SDL 365), Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band's A Tapestry of Carols and the already budget Pleasures and Treasures (SDLC 362). The first three of these presumably represented the current best sellers on vinyl, whilst the last was already under that of the lowest offer cost at £2.95. The order form sensibly suggested adding some substitutes just in case.
